Case Study: Delta House O ffshore production presents some of the most difficult logistical, technological, and financial challenges facing the oil and gas industry today. Topsides engineering for complex offshore facilities can be especially demanding due to the multitude of factors that affect payload and design layout. Integrated design principles and best practices, such as open communication and early contractor involvement, play a critical role in minimizing construction costs, improving safety, keeping pace with aggressive schedules, and maximizing return on investment (ROI). And on LLOG's Delta House floating production system (FPS) in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM), Audubon Engineering Solutions demonstrated why. Project Background The Delta House facility is a FPS installed at a water depth of 4,500 feet approximately 130 miles southeast of New Orleans. It is part of the Delta House Field Development Project, a joint venture between LLOG Exploration Co., LLC and Blackstone Energy Partners (and its affiliates) that will involve the drilling of 15 wells (six of which are already complete) in the Mississippi Canyon Block 254 over the next two years. Initial Situation Construction on the Delta House facility began in 2013 at Kiewit Offshore Services' (KOS) 555-acre fabrication yard in Ingleside, TX. Audubon Engineering Solutions was selected by LLOG as the topsides engineering contractor for the project and Audubon Field Solutions as a liaison between engineering and construction. As with any FPS, straightforward and reliable design principles were essential to meeting the structural demands of the facility; however, Delta House was unique in that it required a "one-size-fits-most," flexible (modular) design to allow for the possibility of additional capacity to support future production. The project schedule was also highly aggressive. LLOG's goal was to have the platform designed, fabricated, and installed within 30 months so that first oil could be achieved by mid-2015. Scope of Work Initial topsides engineering consisted of confirming that the selected EXMAR OPTI-11,000TM semi-submersible hull design would meet the expected payload requirements of the processing and utility equipment, along with the additional 500-tonne payload required for future equipment (in actuality, over 900 tonnes of future payload was achieved). Tracking weight and platform center of gravity (CG) during the construction process was also necessary to ensure the design remained within allowable tolerances. The topsides deck for Delta House was designed as a two-level structure with most of the processing and utilities equipment systems located on the upper level for ease of fabrication, operation, and maintenance. Audubon Engineering Solutions was responsible for the design of the topsides equipment, interconnected piping, structural modules, pipe racks, equipment skids, all electrical and instrumentation (E&I) and the design and construction of the motor control center (MCC) building and living quarters for offshore personnel.
